It was supposed to be a ballet fit for a party boss, with winsome maids and happy Soviet farmers celebrating yet another bountiful harvest, but Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin gave Shostakovich’s politically correct ballet “The Bright Stream” a thumbs down when it premiered in 1935, and Shostakovich never wrote another ballet.
